Speaker Karu Jayasuriya says it is his duty to stand up against all forms of threat to democracy and save it for the generations unborn.
He says what Sri Lanka needs is the right vision, dedication, commitment and discipline, ensuring rule of law, coupled with the right people at the right place.
Jayasuriya was speaking at the ‘Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Award 2018’ event organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, to recognize sustainable champions of the local corporate sphere.
“In the Sri Lanka Parliament, having gone through physical attack, threat to life, abuse and insults coupled with so much of obstruction for having stood up to what is right, this is a peaceful evening, after almost a month. I consider it was my duty to stand up against all forms of threat to Democracy and save it for the generations unborn. You know the value of personal freedom in a civilized country,” he said.
The Speaker said that as a Sri Lankan he would say that the people in the country are citizens of a great country.
“Sri Lanka has tremendous potential for growth and prosperity. We are blessed by nature, geographically we are very well located. There are cities in tge world having a population over 21 million. These cities are run by Mayors and not by Presidents/Prime Ministers, Speakers. What the country needs is right vision, dedication, commitment, discipline, ensuring rule of law, coupled with right people at the right place,” he said.
He also said that the Sri Lanka Parliament was the first parliament in the world to establish a Parliamentary Select Committee and this has become a model to many parliaments in the world. (Colombo Gazette)
