President Maithripala Sirisena today said he hopes to appoint a commission to investigate corruption and malpractice alleged to have taken place under former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s cabinet.
Sirisena told reporters today that there are serious allegations against Wickremesinghe and his cabinet.
The President said the investigation will cover January 2015 to October 2018. He said the investigation will result in serious revelations surfacing, more serious than the Central Bank treasury bond scam.
Sirisena also said that he is prepared to appoint anyone as Prime Minister but not Wickremesinghe or former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.
He said that Fonseka’s name had been linked to the plot to assassinate him.
The President also said that there will not be any interference into the investigations on attacks on journalists and others, including the assassination of journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga and rugger player Wasim Thajudeen. (Colombo Gazette)
