Controversial transfer of CID officer probing key cases cancelled

The controversial transfer of a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer probing key incidents, has been cancelled.

The decision taken earlier to transfer CID, OIC Nishantha Silva drew strong objections.

OIC Nishantha Silva had been involved in the investigations into the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga and attack on journalist Keith Noyahr and was also involved in the investigations into the abduction and disappearance of 11 youth in 2008.

Wickrematunga’s family and human rights groups had urged President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene and suspend the transfer.

Amnesty International?s South Asia Researcher, Thyagi Ruwanpathirana, Amnesty was?concerned about the seeming interference by the authorities with investigations into key allegations of human rights violations including those on attacks against journalists and disappearances.

Ruwanpathirana had said the authorities must ensure that ongoing criminal investigations into these cases are not impeded on any grounds whatsoever. (Colombo Gazette)
