Hambantota Mayor granted bail

Hambantota Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando, who had been sentenced to five years in jail for threatening several United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarians with a pistol, was granted bail today. The incident occurred in 2014 when the UNP MPs had conducted an inspection tour of the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Port. The Hambantota High Court sentenced Fernando to jail in August over the case. The Mayor however appealed against the verdict and was granted bail today.

PM appears before Presidential Commission

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appeared before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry today to record a statement over paddy storage at the Mattala International Airport. The Prime Minister arrived at the BMICH in Colombo where the commission is holding inquiries. Wickremesinghe was set to appear before the commission on October 18 but he was not available on that date. As a result the Prime Minister appeared before the commission today.

Royal Park victim’s sister speaks out against President’s move

The sister of Swedish national Yvonne Johnson, who was killed at the Royal Park Condominium in 2005, has spoken out against President Maithripala Sirisena’s statement that he is considering a Presidential pardon to the convict who carried out the crime.
