President Maithripala Sirisena today revealed that he had offered the post of Prime Minister to United National Party Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa.
He said that he had talks with Premadasa before the post was offered to Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sirisena said that Premadasa had refused to go against Ranil Wickremesinghe and so he turned down the offer.
The President said that the post was also offered to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
He said that Jayasuriya had agreed to accept the post but later turned up at his house with Ranil Wickremesinghe saying he cannot work against Wickremesinghe.
The President accused Wickremesinghe of working against national interests and this forced him to look at other options.
He said that after Karu Jayasuriya and Sajith Premadasa had refused to accept the post he decided to pick Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, and he has no regrets about the decision. (Colombo Gazette)
