Woman arrested over extortion

A woman from Ja-ela was arrested at the Pettah bus stand today for assisting extortionists, the police media unit said. The police said that the arrest was made based on information received by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD). Investigations revealed that she had assisted extortionists to transfer money to her bank account. Most of the extortionists are inmates serving term in prison who telephone people and threaten them and demand money. The people are told to transfer the money to the bank

India warns fishermen on Lanka

The Puducherry government in India has warned fishermen against crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and vennturing into Sri Lankan waters and said action would be taken against violating the order, the Press Trust of India reported.
