UNP will not recognise new Leader of the House

The United National Party (UNP) says it will not recognize the new Leader of the House.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the appointment of?Dinesh Gunawardena as the new Leader of the House was not legally valid.

He said that a majority of the members of Parliament have already signed and submitted a motion to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya saying the prorogation of Parliament and appointment of a new Leader of the House was unconstitutional.

As a result, he says the UNP will not accept or recognise the Leader of the House appointed by the United People’s Freedom Alliance.

Political parties in the Government of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had decided today to appoint Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena as the new Leader of the House.

Government spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said that the decision to appoint?Gunawardena was taken at a meeting held between political parties represented in the Government at the Prime Minister?s office today.

Government decides to delay August 1st reopening of airport
