Australia urges Sri Lanka to refrain from confrontation and violence

Australia has urged Sri Lanka to refrain from confrontation and violence following the political developments in the country.

Australian Foreign Minister Senator Marise Payne said that as a longstanding friend, Australia is concerned by the political developments in Sri Lanka.

“It is important that issues be addressed expeditiously through parliament and that democratic principles and freedoms are upheld,” she said.

Australia urged all parties to respect the democratic will of the people of Sri Lanka, as exercised through their elected representatives.

Senator Marise Payne encouraged all parties to continue to resolve differences peacefully, and refrain from confrontation and violence. (Colombo Gazette)
