Speaker writes to President urging him to reconvene Parliament

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has written to President urging him to reconvene Parliament immediately.

In a letter to the President, Jayasuriya said that he has received a request from 125 Parliamentarians to reconvene Parliament.

He said that the political instability in the country can be resolved only by reconvening Parliament.

The Speaker said that the United National Party, Illangai Thamil Arasu Katchi, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress have made the request to reconvene Parliament.

“As the Speaker, it is my duty and responsibility to listen to these requests. The aforesaid requests can be fulfilled only by summoning the Parliament immediately and handing over the government to the party with the majority. Failure to do so shall amount to a deprivation of democratic right,” he said.

Further, he said the prevailing political instability has already resulted in the loss of two innocent lives and public life is in chaos in many places.

“Media institutions have been stormed and their administration had been forcibly taken over. Incidents of attacks on employees have been reported from workplaces. This is not the good governance culture for which we received a popular mandate. As you have already sworn in a Prime Minister and a Cabinet of Ministers, I kindly appeal to you to summon the Parliament immediately and restore stability without waiting for two weeks. If not, it is inevitable that people may be compelled to look for alternative means to protect democracy,” he said in the letter.

The Speaker urged the President, in the name of democracy, to summon Parliament forthwith for the wellbeing of the public and to ensure justice without allowing the country to be dragged into a crisis.  (Colombo Gazette)

  1. On the 26th night of October, there was a barbarous State Terror attack against Democracy and Governance in Sri Lanka (SL).The UN Chief hurriedly flew to SL immediately, UNFGG, the USA and AI expressed deep concern. Most countries were shocked, fearful and silent as in an armed terror attack.

State Terrorism is something which the Tamils of North and East of SL: experienced with pain and agony. They complained bitterly to GSL, the International Community and the UN but none of them understood it. But on the 26th all were shocked to reality of it happening to the oldest democracy in Asia.

State Terrorism in SL was never allowed to be properly adjudicated and punished for people to know that State Terror is wrong and serious. Therefore, the architects and villains of State Terrorism, Mahinda, Maithri and others courageously staged a terror attack on democracy and governance.

People of SL deserve truthful justice on this matter. All the offenders should be brought to justice for people to know this truth, to forgive them for the offenders do not know that they are wrong, for all to be free and have peace.
