Speaker to seek legal opinion on political crisis

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is to seek legal advise on the political crisis in the country.

The Speaker’s office said that?Jayasuriya will take a decision tomorrow on the stand that needs to be taken by Parliament.

A crisis has developed with the President appointing Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and Ranil Wickremesinghe saying he is still the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the United National Party said that it will request the Speaker to convene Parliament on Sunday to resolve the issue.?(Colombo Gazette)

UPFA withdraws from the Government

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to withdraw from the Government. UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has been informed of the decision. Former Minister and UPFA Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera said that the decision to withdraw from the Government was taken in light of the state of the country. He said that they had no confidence in Wickremesinghe and so wanted him removed as Prime Minister.

President Maithripala Sirisena has written to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe saying he has been sacked. In the letter to?Wickremesinghe, the President said that he has acted within the powers vested in him.
