Northern Provincial Council term ends

The term of the?Northern Provincial Council ended last night.

The last?Northern Provincial Council was elected to office in September 2013.

C.V. Wigneswaran contested under the Tamil National Alliance and won the election and was appointed Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner James Dauris raised concerns over the delay to hold elections for the?Provincial Councils for which the terms have ended.

“Many people will be disappointed that the term in office of a sixth of #SriLanka?s nine Provincial Councils has expired without voting for new representatives taking place or planned.?Timely #elections are key to ensuring that the values of #democracy flourish in our countries,”?James Dauris tweeted. Navy detains six Indians, including two children on a trawler

The Sri Lanka Navy says it detained six Indians, including two children who were on a trawler which entered Sri Lankan waters illegally. The Navy detained the Indians when they entered Sri Lankan waters yesterday (May 30). The Indians were detained by the?North Central Naval Command in the seas off Urumalai in Thalaimannar. Sports Ministry secretary to run cricket board operations till polls

The?Sports Ministry secretary is to run the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board operations till the elections to the board takes place. Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha appointed Sports Ministry secretary H.T. Kamal Padmasiri to run the operations of the cricket board as the board elections had been postponed on a court order.
