Bus fares increased by 4%

The Government has decided to increase bus fares as a result of the fuel price increase.

Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala de Silva said that bus fares will be increased by 4% with effect from midnight tomorrow (20).

However, the Minister said the minimum fare will remain Rs 12.

The decision to increase bus fares was taken following talks held between the Transport Minister and private bus trade unions today. (Colombo Gazette)

Suspect dies while in Police custody

A suspected burglar died while in Police custody, the Police media unit said today. The Police said the burglar fell from the third floor of a house in Mattakkuliya when he had attempted to escape after attempting a robbery. According to the Police, the man was captured by area residents and handed over to the Police. However he died while in Police custody. Investigations are underway.
