Navy detains 90 Sri Lankans attempting to reach Réunion Island

The Navy detained 90 Sri Lankans attempting to reach Réunion Island by boat.

The Sri Lankans had been detained off the coast of Negombo.

The Navy media unit said that naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command apprehended the 90 suspects onboard a suspicious trawler plying in the Western seas of Sri Lanka today.

Having spotted the suspicious trawler in the sea about 40 nautical miles West of Negombo, two Fast Attack Craft were deployed to the location.

on being searched, Naval personnel found 90 Sri Lankan immigrants who were heading to Reunion Island.

Among the suspects were 89 men and one woman. During investigations it was revealed that the asylum seekers were residents of Batticoloa, Thoduwawa, Udappuwa, Chilaw, Mannar, Ampara and Matale.

Subsequently, the suspects were brought to the Colombo harbour and given first aid and other medical treatment. They were later handed over to the Harbour Police, Colombo for onward action. (Colombo Gazette)
