Parliament explodes over scheduled protest by joint opposition

Parliament had to be adjourned today after a tense situation arose over the scheduled protest by the joint opposition tomorrow.

The tense situation arose after the joint opposition accused the Government of attempting to block a mass protest set to take place in Colombo tomorrow against the Government.

Joint opposition Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament they had information the Police was to be used to block the peaceful protest.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe however insisted that there was no move to stop the protest.

He said that unlike the former Government, the current Government will ensure the public have full freedom like the media.

Law and order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara told Parliament the Government had not given the Police any instructions to stop the protest from taking place.

However he said the police were told to ensure Parliamentarians can attend Parliament sittings tomorrow.

The joint opposition however said that the Minister was misleading Parliament and that the Police had been ordered to obtain a court order against the protest. (Colombo Gazette)
