President insists capital punishment will be implemented

President Maithripala Sirisena today insisted that capital punishment will be implemented.

He said that steps will be taken to enforce the law, including capital punishment against accused who engaged in drug smuggling even when they were in prison.

The President made these remarks while participating in the inauguration ceremony of the reconstructed Myliddy fisheries harbour and re-launching of the operational work of the harbour, today (22).

Speaking further, the President said that during the last three years the Government worked with commitment to protect and free the country from allegations leveled against the country internationally while fulfilling the responsibilities of the post-war period dutifully, to convert the hard earned freedom into true liberty.

The President further said that the government is paying special attention to the development rights of the people in the North and East.

In this regard a Special Presidential Task Force has been established, the President said adding that the Task Force will meet frequently to discuss the progress of its work.

The President recalled that no other President ever travelled to the North like him and that he frequently travelled to the North to identify the issues of the people and to expedite the relief work in this regard. (Colombo Gazette)
