Speaker defends decision on opposition leader post

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today defended his decision not to change the leader of the opposition in Parliament.

Jayasuriya said in a statement that the decision taken earlier was done after careful consideration.

The joint opposition has opposed the decision taken by the Speaker to keep?Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R Sampanthan as the opposition leader.

Some joint opposition members have said they will not recognize the Speaker if he fails to recognize their demands.

The Speaker however said that he had studied the matter very closely and had wide ranging discussions on the matter and also based his decision on the standing orders of Parliament.

The joint opposition wants Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena to be appointed as the leader of the opposition. (Colombo Gazette)

UK envoy and Defence Secretary have bilateral talks

The British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, James Dauris met the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kapila Waidyaratne for talks today. During the meeting a cordial discussion was held between the Secretary and the British High Commissioner on matters of bilateral importance and mutual relevance, the Defence Ministry said. Gold biscuits smuggled from Sri Lanka seized in India

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in India has struck a hat-trick, seizing 28 kg of gold biscuits smuggled from Sri Lanka via the sea route in three separate incidents ? one in Coimbatore and two in Ramanathapuram district.
