Railway trade unions suspend strike after talks

Railway trade unions today (Sunday) decided to suspend their strike after talks President Maithripala Sirisena.

The strike was launched on Wednesday over demands for a higher salary and railway passengers staged a protest blocking the street opposite the Fort railway station in protest over the strike.

Irate passengers also protested inside the Fort railway and damaged railway property in the process.

The Police Special Task Force was deployed to the Fort railway station to bring the situation under control.

As the strike continued, the Government decided to allow private buses to operate on any route despite the route permits issued to them, until the railway strike ends. (Colombo Gazette)
