President appoints committee to study Singapore – Sri Lanka FTA

Following concerns raised, President Maithripala Sirisena appointed an independent committee to study and compile a report on the Singapore – Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement.

The committee will consist of prominent economists and will be chaired by former Vice-Chancellor of Colombo University, Deshamanya Professor W.D. Lakshman.

Former Professor of Economics at the Open University Prof. Sirimevan Colombage, former Professor of Economics of the University of Kelaniya Prof. Ajitha Tennakoon, economic consultant Dr. Sanath Jayanetti and former Assistant Governor of Central Bank R.A. Jayatissa have been appointed as members of the committee. (Colombo Gazette)

Sri Lankans stranded in UAE arrive in Mattala

A group of Sri Lankans who were stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have arrived in Sri Lanka. The group of 298 Sri Lankans were stranded in the UAE due to the COVID-19 pandemic They arrived at the Mattala International Airport in Hambantota via a special SriLankan Airlines flight. They will be transferred to quarantine centers after undergoing PCR or Covid-19 tests. (Colombo Gazette)

Indian involved in fraud arrested in Colombo

An Indian national has been arrested in Bambalapitiya, Colombo on charges of defrauding the public by promising jobs in Canada. The Police said the suspect had defrauded the public of over Rs. 10.4 million. The 32 year -old suspect was arrested at the Bambalapitiya Junction last afternoon (08) by officials from the Colombo Financial Investigation Bureau. The Indian national is to be produced before the Fort Magistrate?s Court today. (Colombo Gazette)
