Navy arrests 27 Indian fishermen poaching in the Northern seas

The?Navy says it arrested 27 Indian fishermen poaching in the Northern seas.

The 27 Indian fishermen were detained together with four dhows which were engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters last evening (Friday).

The arrest was made by a fast gun boat attached to the Northern Naval Command in the northern seas.

Subsequently, the Indian fishermen and their dhows were brought to the naval base SLNS Elara today (Saturday).

Medical tests were carried out on the fishermen before they were handed over to the Jaffna Assistant Director of Fisheries through the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, for onward action.

Over 100 Koggala garment factory employees hospitalised

Over 100 garment factory employees at the Koggala Free Trade Zone have been admitted to hospital following suspected food poisoning. The Police said that 114 employees of an apparel factory located at the Koggala Free Trade Zone were taken to hospital. The employees were admitted to the Imaduwa, Ahangama, Kalugala and Karapitiya hospitals for treatment. An investigation has also been launched into the incident. (Colombo Gazette)

Cabinet postpones decision on tariff hike

The Cabinet has postponed the decision on the proposed electricity tariff hike. Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara had submitted a Cabinet Paper on the proposed revision of electricity tariffs to the Cabinet. However, the Cabinet had decided to study the matter further and take a decision at its next Cabinet meeting next week.
