Train strike continues, special buses deployed for passengers

The train strike continued today with railway trade unions saying their demands had not yet been met.

The Government said that special buses had been deployed today to transport passengers who travel by train.

Railway passengers staged a protest yesterday blocking the street opposite the Fort railway station as railway trade unions staged a lightning strike.

Irate passengers also protested inside the Fort railway station last evening and damaged railway property in the process.

The Police Special Task Force was deployed to the Fort railway station to bring the situation under control.

As the strike continued, the Government decided to allow private buses to operate on any route despite the route permits issued to them, until the railway strike ends.

The Government said that the Army had been deployed to operate special bus services for students sitting for the Advanced Level examination during the strike.?(Colombo Gazette)

Police arrest 12 asylum seekers

The police have arrested 12 people who attempted to go to Australia by boat illegally from Chilaw and Mahawewa, the police media unit said today. All 12 people were arrested yesterday by the Chilaw police intelligence unit together with two vans and a motorbike, the police said. The failed asylum seekers are said to be from Lunuwila, Mahawewa, Chilaw, Mullaitivu, Puthukudirippu, Jaffna and Akarayankulam. The Chilaw police are conducting further investigations.

Cop arrested for child rape

A policeman has been arrested for raping an underage girl who had gone to witness the Kataragama perahera last night. The 13 year old girl was watching the festivities from near a bridge in the Kataragama sacred zone when she was raped by the policeman. The police constable was subsequently arrested and was to be produced in court today. Earlier this month the police announced that there was a steep rise in the number of rape incidents reported around the country.

CPC loses $162 mln appeal against London ruling

Sri Lanka’s state-run oil company lost an appeal against a London court ruling which ordered it to pay nearly $162 million plus interest for non-payment of dues to Standard Chartered Bank linked to hedging deals, government officials said on Friday.
