President says he will not approve pay hike for MPs

President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will not approve an increase of the salary for Members of Parliament.

The President made these comments while addressing a gathering at an event in Polonnaruwa today.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had said earlier there was no final decision on increasing the salaries of Members of Parliament.

In a media statement yesterday, Jayasuriya said that there has been a lot of debate in the media over reports a decision had been taken to increase the salaries of Parliamentarians.

The Speaker said that any increase of the salaries of MPs must be in line with a decision reached by Parliament in 2006 on the salaries of MPs and High Court judges.

Jayasuriya said that the salaries of High Court judges had been increased recently in line with the decision reached on 2006/23/11 and there was a proposal to increase the salaries of MPs as well.

He however said that while the proposal is being studied no final decision has been reached. (Colombo Gazette)
