Discussion held on holding PC elections as soon as possible

A discussion headed by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was held today on holding the Provincial Council (PC) elections as soon as possible.

The discussion was attended by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, opposition leader R. Sampanthan,?Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faizer Mustapha and party leaders from the opposition and minority parties.

The Elections Commissioner, Attorney General and other officials also attended the discussion.

Jayasuriya noted that concerns are being raised over the delay to hold the elections on schedule.

The Elections Commissioner said that if a final decision is taken before the end of October with regards to the elections then the elections can be held on January 5th next year.

Another discussion with regards to the election is to take place on July 26th. (Colombo Gazette)

Island-wide curfew lifted

The island-wide curfew re-imposed last night as tensions continued around the country, has been lifted this morning. The Police said that the curfew was in place from 9Pm last night to 4am today. The curfew in Gampaha was enforced from 7pm last night to 6am today.

Mahason Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe remanded

Mahason Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe, who was arrested by the Police yesterday, was today ordered to be remanded till May 28. Weerasinghe was arrested over an incident reported from Theldeniya. Amith Weerasinghe had instigated attacks on Muslims in parts of Kandy last year. He had also attempted to stage a protest in Kandy on Saturday but a court order was issued against the protest.?(Colombo Gazette)
