PM says probe on allegations of China funding MR continuing

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliamentarians of the United National Party (UNP)-led United National Front (UNF) today that investigations into allegations a Chinese company had funded former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign was ongoing.

He said that investigations into funds received by Rajapaksa’s office ahead of the 2015 Presidential elections had revealed that some funds had come from?China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC).

China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd, which established the Hambantota Harbour, has already denied the reports after it appeared in the New York Times recently.

However the Prime Minister told the UNF members that investigations into the alleged funding was still continuing and had not been suspended as reported in some media over the weekend.

The Prime Minister said that based on a complaint received an investigation had been launched into the allegations in May 2016 by the special Police investigations unit.

He said that investigations had revealed that from December 2014 to 2015 January 8th a total of 82?cheques to the value of Rs. 1398 million had been encashed and handed over to then President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s office.

The Prime Minister said that the Police had handed over documents related to the investigations to the Attorney General’s Department and investigations were continuing. (Colombo Gazette)
