Udayanga Weeratunga expected to return to Sri Lanka soon

Sri Lanka?s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga is expected to return to Sri Lanka soon.

An organisation backed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to file a motion in court tomorrow seeking an order against arresting?Weeratunga on his return.

Nalin Nissanka, who is part of the organisation said that lawyers who are part of the organisation will appear on behalf of?Weeratunga in court.

An Interpol warrant had been issued for Weeratunga?s arrest over ongoing investigations into the controversial MiG aircraft deal.

The Supreme Court had in May rejected a petition filed by Weeratunga against his arrest warrant and restrictions on his bank accounts.

Weeratunga was recently detained in?Dubai but the authorities refused to hand him over to Sri Lanka.

The authorities in Dubai had arrested Weeratunga based on investigations and submissions made by the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID). (Colombo Gazette)

Asgiriya Chief Prelate questions North CM?s demand

The Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera, has questioned the demand by the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C V Wigneswaran, that the army should be withdrawn from Jaffna. The Venerable Galagama Attadassi Thera said that the Government must be wise when responding to such demands and ensure that Sri Lanka remains united under one National flag. The Chief Prelate said this when he met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is on a visit to Kandy.

Court seeks probe on calls made by Jaffna suspects

The Kayts Magistrate today ordered the police to investigate and submit a report on the telephone calls made by the suspects involved in the Jaffna rape and murder incident. The nine suspects arrested over the rape and murder of?Sivaloganathan Vithya, were further remanded today till June 15. The suspects were produced before the?Kayts Magistrate?today when?the case into the murder was heard. During the hearing, which lasted for an hour, the police made submissions with regards to the murder.
