UNP condemns any move to block media critical of President

The United National Party (UNP) today condemned any move to block the operations of media institutions critical of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Joint opposition Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa raised the issue where the transmission tower of TNL TV at Polgahawela was sealed by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) today.

Weerawansa said that TNL TV had in the past attacked him and others in the opposition yet as a media institution it must be allowed to continue.

He questioned Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera if he was aware of the move to block the transmission of TNL TV.

Samaraweera said he was made aware of the incident involving TNL TV only late this evening and was looking into it.

State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva told Parliament the President must intervene as the TRC operates under him.

An official at TNL TV said that it is the opinion of the TNL TV management that the TNL TV tower was sealed as the TV network had aired a news report critical of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Samaraweera told Parliament that he had often been attacked by Sirasa TV yet he would not call for the TV network to be shut down. (Colombo Gazette)
