UNP confirms will put forward UNP candidate for President

The United National Party (UNP) today confirmed that it will put forward a UNP candidate for President at the next Presidential elections.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj?Kariyawasam confirmed the position of the UNP when responding to questions raised by journalists at an event today.

Kariyawasam also said that the UNP does not see any challenge even if former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa were to contest the 2020 Presidential elections.

The UNP had supported Maithripala Sirisena at the last Presidential elections and formed a unity Government.

Meanwhile UNP Media Spokesman Harin Fernando said that the 100 Day Program of the?unity Government was an idea of all those who united to form the?unity Government.

He also admitted that the Government had failed to fulfill all the promises made under the?100 Day Program. (Colombo Gazette)

Cops arrested over deaths of two Jaffna Uni students

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has commenced an investigation into the deaths of two Jaffna University students, who were travelling on a motorcycle in Kankasanturai. The Post Mortem into these deaths are now being held, and five Police officers have been arrested over the incident and were immediately interdicted, the Government Information department said. Three arrested for trying to smuggle medicines to Lanka

Three people, including two Sri Lankans, have been arrested at Vethalai near Rameswaram?for attempting to smuggle medicines worth about Rs 2.5 lakh to Sri Lanka, the police said today. Rajagopalan and Murugan, both hailing from Jaffna in Sri Lanka, and Mahesh had planned to smuggle the medicine by boat to Sri Lanka last night, police said, according to the Press Trust of India.
