Prime Minister warns against backing a military style regime

United National Party (UNP) leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today warned the media and the public not to leave room for a military style regime to be elected to power.

Wickremesinghe said that the public must decide if they want democracy or a military style regime like the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime.

The Prime Minister said that some groups are attempting to push for the return to power of the Rajapaksa regime which would be the Rajapaksa “regime 2”.

Wickremesingh was speaking at an event held at the UNP headquarters today after Minister Navin Dissanayake took office as the UNP National Organiser.

Speaking further, the Prime Minister said that journalists who support Rajapaksa returning to power risk going missing if Rajapaksa does win the next election.

The Prime Minister also said that the UNP will push ahead with party reforms which will give more young members in the party leadership roles to take the party forward. (Colombo Gazette)
