New deal to be signed with ICRC to inspect detention centres

Cabinet has approved a proposal to sign a new agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the ICRC to inspect prisons and detention centres.

The proposal put forward by Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana was approved by the cabinet, the Government information department said.

The Government information department said that the ICRC had sought the signing of the new deal with Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka and the ICRC already have an agreement reached when the former Government was in office, to visit and inspect prisons and detention centres.

However the ICRC has sough a new, post war deal with Sri Lanka on inspecting prisons and detention centres, and cabinet has approved signing such an agreement with the ICRC. (Colombo Gazette)
