Maldives President seeks support for re-election at polls

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom sought support to be re-elected as President at the Presidential elections scheduled to be held later this year.

Yameen is expected to face stiff competition from former President Mohamed Nasheed, if he is allowed to contest as he has been charged in court, or a candidate put forward by the opposition.

The President’s office, on Saturday, quoted him as saying that he will seek re-election to fulfill the dreams and needs of the Maldives people.

The President made this request while speaking at a function organized by the Progressive Party of Maldives.

The President took note of the importance of every citizen having the right to decide the affairs of the State directly related to them.

President Yameen noted that every leader comes to power with the intention of fulfilling the necessities of the people while maintaining peace in the country. He further stated that if this basis was jeopardized and the leader was unable to reinstate peace in the country, the public will eventually want a change in power.

Speaking on the Presidential elections Yameen highlighted the important specifics that the people need to consider when casting their vote for President.

The President also spoke of the development work carried out over the past four and a half years, and stated that his administration had brought back hope and aspirations to the hearts of all Maldivians.

Yameen insisted that every citizen had equal rights in the Maldives every Maldivian was equal in front of the law. He further stated that the outlook of Maldives is changing, along with the views and opinions of the public, being content with hope for a brighter future. (Asia Pacific Daily)
