Government says shanties will be removed from Colombo by 2023

The Government says shanties will be removed from Colombo by the year 2023.

Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Champika Ranawaka said that approximately 70 percent of the population in Colombo live in shanties.

He said that past Governments attempted to address the issues faced by the families living in shanties yet the matter was never fully resolved.

Ranawaka said that the current Government is building five cities within the Colombo city limits.

He said that Dematagoda and Nawala are among the areas being developed as part of the overall plan to develop Colombo.

The Minister said that by 2020 the Government hopes to have allocated 20,000 houses to meet the housing needs of Colombo. (Colombo Gazette)
