Government says shanties will be removed from Colombo by 2023

The?Government says shanties will be removed from Colombo by the year 2023.

Minister of Megapolis and Western Development?Champika Ranawaka said that approximately 70 percent of the population in Colombo live in shanties.

He said that past Governments attempted to address the issues faced by the families living in shanties yet the matter was never fully resolved.

Ranawaka said that the current Government is building five cities within the Colombo city limits.

He said that Dematagoda and Nawala are among the areas being developed as part of the overall plan to develop Colombo.

The Minister said that by 2020 the Government hopes to have allocated 20,000 houses to meet the housing needs of Colombo. (Colombo Gazette)

UNP MP Shantha Abeysekara granted bail

United National Party Puttalam District Parliamentarian Shantha Abeysekara, who was in remand custody, was granted bail today. MP Abeysekara had been in remand for violating his bail conditions over a 2004 case. He had been arrested after being charged with the illegal possession of a firearm while taking part in an unlawful assembly in Chilaw in 2004. He was granted bail in the case but was remanded last October for violating his bail conditions.
