Navy detains three suspects attempting to smuggle gold

The Navy detained three suspects attempting to smuggle gold out of the country, the Navy media unit said.

The Navy said that the three Sri Lankan nationals attempting to smuggle 24.2 kg of gold from the country via sea were detained by Navy officers attached to the North Central Naval Command in the seas north of Mannar.

It is believed that the 242 gold biscuits, each weighing 100g, are worth approximately Rs. 170 million.

During the arrest a dinghy used for the attempt to smuggle the gold was seized. (Colombo Gazette)
