Polythene lunch sheets, rigifoam banned from September

The use of polythene lunch sheets, rigifoam lunch boxes and shopping bags will be banned from September. A proposal made by President Maithripala Sirisena, in his capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, to implement short term, medium term and long term activities recommended by the committee of intellectuals appointed in this regard, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Temporary staff forced to remove pants to be compensated

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board said that temporary ground staff who were forced to remove their pants following the cricket match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at the?Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Sooriyawewa, will be compensated. HRC investigates Police shooting of youth in North

The Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka is investigating the incident where a youth was killed when the Police opened fire on his vehicle this week. Two policemen have been arrested over the incident and they have been remanded till July 24. The Police opened fire on the vehicle in Vadamarachchi East, which allegedly failed to stop at a Police check point.?The 24 year old was killed in the gunfire. According to the Police the vehicle was transporting sand without a permit.?(Colombo Gazette)
