Lanka says no deal with Pakistan on nuclear plant

The government today denied Indian media reports that it was to build a nuclear power plant in the east of the country with the assistance from Pakistan. The Minister of Power and Energy Champika Ranawaka said that reports to that effect were misleading and could harm the relations Sri Lanka has with its neighbors. Reports in India this week had claimed that Sri Lanka was to have discussions with Pakistan for the setting up of a nuclear power plant in Sampur, Trincomallee in eastern Sri Lanka.

CPC loses $162 mln appeal against London ruling

Sri Lanka’s state-run oil company lost an appeal against a London court ruling which ordered it to pay nearly $162 million plus interest for non-payment of dues to Standard Chartered Bank linked to hedging deals, government officials said on Friday. Extortionists arrested

The police arrested two extortionists in Walasmulla early this morning after they had threatened a businessman in the area and demanded ransom. According to the police media unit one man had contacted the businessman and said that he was Julampitiya Amare, an underworld figure who is already in police custody over a shooting incident.
