FB likely to be controlled in Sri Lanka to block hate speech

Facebook usage is likely to be controlled in Sri Lanka to block hate speech from being published.

Officials from Facebook are scheduled to meet the Government in Colombo on Thursday with the discussions focused on how hate speech can be filtered on Facebook.

President Maithripala Sirisena had said in Japan today that a new mechanism will be introduced to prevent the use of hate speech on social media in Sri Lanka.

The Government blocked access to Facebook and other key social media websites since last week following communal violence in Kandy.

The restrictions are expected to be removed over the next few days. (Colombo Gazette)
