Bail granted to 51 remanded over Thambuttegama protest

The?Thambuttegama Magistrate today granted bail to 51 people who were arrested and remanded over the recent protest in?Thambuttegama.

The Police had arrested?the suspects during the protest last week and they were produced before the Thambuttegama Magistrate Court and remanded till today.

The protesters marched along the streets blocking traffic along the Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road and vented their over a move to use water from the?Rajanganaya Tank for a water project.

After a heated exchange of words with the Police the mob surrounded the?Thambuttegama Police Station and attacked it with stones.

The Police later used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the mob.?(Colombo Gazette)

Court of Appeal decides to hear fresh case on Wilpattu resettlement

The Court of Appeal has decided to hear a fresh case on the resettlement of families in Wilpattu. The case will be heard against Minister Rishad Bathiudeen from July 31. SLPP calls for motion to dissolve Parliament

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) says it is ready to support a motion to dissolve Parliament. Parliamentarian Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said that there are some elements in Parliament who must be removed. Health Minister gags hospital officials from speaking to media

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has issued instructions preventing officials who are part of the administration of Government hospitals from speaking to the media. In a notice issued today, the Health Ministry said that officials attached to Government hospitals need to obtain prior approval from the Ministry Secretary to speak to the media.
