Drinking water project suspended after Thambuttegama protest

A drinking water project which resulted in a protest in Thambuttegama yesterday, has been suspended.

The Police had arrested 57 suspects during the protest and they were produced before the Thambuttegama Magistrate Court and remanded till March 5.

The protesters marched along the streets blocking traffic along the Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road and vented their over a move to use water from the Rajanganaya Tank for a water project.

After a heated exchange of words with the Police the mob surrounded the Thambuttegama Police Station and attacked it with stones.

The Police later used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the mob. (Colombo Gazette)
