Policemen injured, 44 arrested following protest in Thambuttegama

At least four policemen were injured and 44 people were arrested following a protest in Thambuttegama today.

The protesters marched along the streets blocking traffic along the Kurunegala-Anuradhapura road and vented their over a move to use water from the Rajanganaya Tank for a water project.

After a heated exchange of words with the Police the mob surrounded the Thambuttegama Police Station and attacked it with stones.

The Police later used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the mob.

At least five women were among those arrested. (Colombo Gazette)
