Interim order issued against arresting former IGP

An interim order was issued today by the Supreme Court against arresting former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jayantha Wickramaratne in connection to the case over the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga.

The interim order was issued after Wickramaratne filed a petition in court against moves to arrest him.

A former police officer arrested earlier in connection with the murder of Wickrematunge had revealed significant information about the crime.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had arrested former Crimes Office-In-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Police, Sub Inspector Tissa Sugathapala for concealing and destroying information pertaining to the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Based on the information provided by the suspect, it was reported that the CID had obtained advice from the Attorney General to arrest Wickramaratne.

Wickramaratne was the IGP at the time Lasantha Wickrematunge was killed.

Lasantha was killed in Attidiya on January 8, 2009 while he was on his way to his office. (Colombo Gazette)
