Mahinda wants Parliament dissolved and early elections

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today called on President Maithripala Sirisena to dissolve Parliament and hold early Parliament elections.

Speaking to reporters at a media briefing, Rajapaksa said that the victory at the just concluded Local Government elections by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was historic as it was achieved within a short period of time since the party was formed.

He said that the SLPP was able to win 232 councils at the Local Government elections while the other two main political parties suffered a heavy defeat.

Rajapaksa said that the Local Government election was like an unofficial referendum to see the pulse of the public on the achievements of the Government since it took office in 2015.

He said that the outcome of the elections showed that the public had rejected the policies and the actions of the Government.

The former President was of the opinion that one of the most serious issues was that the Government took “revenge” on the soldiers who fought against the LTTE.

Rajapaksa said that the public have now clearly called for an early General Election to establish a stable Government. (Colombo Gazette)
