The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is to push for a snap General Election following its surprise win at the Local Government (LG) elections.
SLPP sources said that the party led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will ride on the public confidence it had obtained at the LG elections to push for a snap General Election.
The SLPP is expected to obtain the support of several key Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members for a General Election to form a new Government.
According to the SLPP, the party will push for the required legal amendments through Parliament to facilitate an early election.
The last General Election was staged in 2015 and the next election is scheduled for after 2020.
However public support for the Government has seen a drastic drop since 2015 and the SLPP says it will look to push for an early General Election to make use of the support it has now. (Colombo Gazette)
