Government says no decision taken to make MR PM

The Government says no decision has been taken to make former President Mahinda Rajapaksa the Prime Minister.

Cabinet spokesman Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the Government will also not agree for an early General Election.

Commenting on the outcome of the Local Government (LG) elections, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had secured just over 45 percent of the total votes and this was below the number of votes Rajapaksa got at the last Presidential elections.

Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the LG election results showed that most people voted against the SLPP and not for the SLPP.

Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that he spoke to President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe with regards to the outcome of the elections.

He said that both the President and Prime Minister were ready to address any shortcomings and take the country forward.

The cabinet spokesman further added that just because Rajapaksa feels he won the LG elections he cannot be made Prime Minister or call for an early General Election.

He also insisted that the President and the Prime Minister have not taken any decision to make Rajapaksa the Prime Minister. (Colombo Gazette)
