Bangladeshi, Myanmar nationals detained in Mirihana

The 138 Bangladeshi and Myanmar nationals have been ordered to be detained at the Mirihana police detention center. According to the police media unit, the order was given by the Akaraipattu Magistrate. The Magistrate had ordered that they be remanded till Friday and be detained at the Mirihana special detention center. Rights group seeks release of 2 students

Amnesty International, a London based international human rights group, is campaigning for the release of two Jaffna university students who are under police custody. Moratuwa Deputy Mayor arrested

The Deputy Mayor of Moratuwa, Sujith Pushpakumara has been arrested over the murder of a monk in the area. According to the police, the Deputy Mayor was arrested on suspicion and is being questioned over the incident. The monk in Moratuwa was stabbed to death during the late hours of last night. The victim was identified as the Venerable Metiyakanda Wimalawansa, a monk attached to a Temple in Egoda Uyana Moratuwa. Investigations revealed that the murder was over a land dispute involving two men.
