Lankan Tamil refugees held for illegally entering India

Four Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, including a pregnant woman, who arrived off the?Dhanushkodi?coast?in Rameswaram by an illegal ferry service today were arrested, the Press Trust of India reported.

The refugees reached Arichalmunai near?Dhanushkodi?from?Sri Lanka?by paying Indian Rs 30,000 as ferry charge, marine police said.The refugees confessed that they had come for medical treatment.

Police said they were arrested under the Passport Act.Investigation is on, they added.

On February 5, an 18-feet long Sri Lankan boat was found abandoned at Kambipaadu off?Dhanushkodi?coast with police suspecting the arrival of atleast six persons, either smugglers or illegal immigrants, by it. (Colombo Gazette)

One person killed following shooting incident in Angoda

One person was killed following a shooting incident in the Angoda area this morning. The Police said that a 42-year old individual was shot dead while another person sustained injuries. The shooting incident took place at a house in the Angoda area. Senior Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Deshabandu Thennakoon said that the shooting incident was believed to be linked to the illegal drugs trade. Overnight curfew lifted from tomorrow

The overnight curfew which was enforced from 11pm-4am daily, will be lifted from tomorrow (Tuesday). The Ministry of health said that the overnight curfew has been lifted as part of measures to further relax the current Covid restrictions in the country.
