Uva Chief Minister appears before HRCSL over kneeling incident

The Chief Minister of the Uva Province, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, appeared before the?Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) today.

The HRCSL had issued notice on the?Chief Minister to appear to make a statement over an?incident where the Chief Minister had allegedly forced a principal from a school in Badulla to kneel before him.

HRCSL had earlier recorded?statements from several people over the incident, including the school?principal.

The Chief Minister had reportedly summoned the principal of Tamil Girls? Maha Vidyalaya, Badulla to his residence and made her kneel on the floor because she had refused to enroll a student recommended by him. (Colombo Gazette)

Nineteen students of Ruhuna Uni further remanded

Nineteen students of the Ruhuna University were today ordered to be further remanded over a ragging incident. The students were produced before the Matara Magistrate today who ordered that they be further remanded till August 26.

Police bust attempt by illegal migrants to head to Australia

The Police busted an attempt by a group of illegal migrants planning to travel to Australia by boat. The Police said that 12 people were arrested in the Chilaw area while they were preparing to make the journey by boat. They were arrested in Iranawila based on information received by the Police.
