Speaker to meet party leaders tomorrow on Parliament debate

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has convened a special party leaders meeting tomorrow to discuss calls for the Parliament debate on the treasury bond report and the report on large scale financial fraud to be held before February 10.

The Speaker’s office said that several requests have been made to hold the debate before the Local Government elections on?February 10.

Accordingly the Speaker has decided to discuss the matter tomorrow and take a final decision.

Parliament is scheduled to debate the report of the Presidential Commission which investigated the treasury bond scam and the report of the Commission of Inquiry appointed to investigate into serious acts of fraud and corruption on February 20 and 21st. (Colombo Gazette)

Over 4000 people still in IDP camps in Jaffna

Over 4000 people are still housed in IDP camps in Jaffna,?Minister of Resettlement and Rehabilitation D M Swaminathan informed Parliament today. Parliament divided on implementing death penalty

Parliament was divided today when the death penalty was discussed with some for and others against its immediate implementation. Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra, who put forward a motion on the death penalty, noted that most people in the country feel the death penalty should not be implemented as it goes against Buddhist culture.
