Magistrate grants bail to 58 protesters over Kataragama violence

The Tissamaharama Magistrate today granted bail to 58 protesters who had been arrested yesterday over their involvement in the violence in Kataragama.
The Police fired tear gas and made several arrests as violence erupted in Kataragama following tensions resulting from a shooting incident.
The tense situation arose in Kataragama after the Police shot dead a motorcyclist who ignored orders and failed to stop.
Area residents who were outraged over the shooting attacked the Kataragama police station on Sunday night.
The policeman who opened fire was later arrested and remanded till January 30.
Protests were staged near the?Kataragama police station yesterday with tires being burnt along the streets.
As the situation escalated, the Police fired tear gas towards the unruly crowd and arrested several people including 15 women.
The Special Task Force had been deployed to provide security to the?Kataragama police station.?(Colombo Gazette)
