UNP plays down statement by MS of taking over economy

The United National Party (UNP) played down a statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena that he has taken over directing the national economy from this year.

Deputy Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva said that he spoke to the President and that the President insisted he didn’t mean taking over the responsibilities of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe but only use the National Economic Council (NEC) more for the national economy.

“NEC has President PM FinMin some others. He took time to explain to me what he meant at Bogollagama wedding,” Harsha de Silva tweeted.

The President had said that the handling of the national economy was in the hands of the UNP over the past two years.

However he says from this year the economy will be his responsibility.

The President said that the economy was under severe strain over the past three years.

“From this year I will be taking the leadership on managing the national economy,” the President said.

The President had expressed these views at a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) election rally in Kegalle yesterday (Saturday).(Colombo Gazette)
