Police fire tear gas, make several arrests as Kataragama erupts

The Police fired tear gas and made several arrests as Kataragama erupted today following overnight tensions resulting from a shooting incident.

A tense situation arose in Kataragama last night after the Police shot dead a motorcyclist who ignored orders and failed to stop.

Area residents who were outraged over the shooting attacked the Kataragama police station last night.

The policeman who opened fire was later arrested and remanded till January 30.

Protests were staged near the Kataragama police station today with tires being burnt along the streets.

As the situation escalated, the Police fired tear gas towards the unruly crowd and arrested over 63 people including 15 women.

The Special Task Force had been deployed to provide security to the Kataragama police station. (Colombo Gazette)
