Udayanga insists property in Sri Lanka legally purchased

Sri Lanka?s former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga insists property owned by him in Sri Lanka had been legally purchased.

The Fort Magistrate had yesterday issued an order against the sale or transfer of any land belonging to Weeratunga.

In a media statement today,?Weeratunga said the property had been purchased using funds he had collected legally and saved in bank accounts in Sri Lanka.

He said that in 2015 the Central Bank had frozen his accounts in Sri Lanka without any valid reasons or prior notification.

A warrant was issued on Udayanga Weeratunga last year over ongoing investigations into the controversial MiG deal.

Udayanga Weeratunga claims he is in Ukraine and has refused to support any investigations against him.

He says the Government is using him now to win votes at the Local Government elections. (Colombo Gazette)
